Two Secondary 3 students from Crescent Girls’ School (CGS) delved into the optometry profession through the Work Experiential Programme (WEP) from 18 to 22 November 2024, a unique initiative designed to take students beyond the classroom and offer them a deeper understanding of various industries.
Guided by members of Singapore Polytechnic’s (SP) Diploma in Optometry (DOPT) Student Chapter, the students participated in tutorials, practical lessons, and clinical sessions at the SP Optometry Centre (SPOC). These experiences provided a glimpse into the learning journey of an optometrist, showcasing both the academic and clinical aspects of the profession.

The programme also extended beyond SP campus, featuring collaborations with industry partners: CooperVision Singapore and Eyesight.sg. These partnerships enriched the students’ exposure, allowing them to observe and participate in diverse optometry-related activities. They explored roles ranging from conducting eye care consultations to engaging in marketing strategies and learning about technological advancements in the contact lens industry.

By piloting this initiative, SP’s DOPT and CGS have demonstrated the power of school-industry collaborations to ignite curiosity and inspire students to consider potential career paths. For the two CGS participants, the WEP experience provided a unique opportunity to step into the professional world, fostering insights and aspirations for their future. This collaboration highlights the importance of introducing students to career opportunities early, enabling them to explore various pathways with confidence and curiosity. Through the WEP, students not only gained a deeper understanding of the optometry profession but also an appreciation for its vital role in eye care.
