Jessica Muliawati

Diploma in Optometry
Alumna of SMAK 1 Penabur Jakarta (Indonesia)

I really enjoy studying in SP because I’m surrounded by friends and lecturers who are very supportive in my academic and social life. Not only that, we can acquire assistance easily because the educators are open for communication when the students have any questions. I also really love the food provided by the food courts here as they fit my taste buds well!

Question: Do I need a visa to study in Singapore?

All international students must have a valid pass to study in Singapore Polytechnic and are advised to apply for a Student’s Pass. You may refer to this website for the Student’s Pass application guide. Successful applicants will be issued an In-Principle Approval (IPA) letter by the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA). For students who require a visa, the IPA letter also serves as a pre-approved visa.

Question: Will I be required to go through a pre-enrolment medical examination?

Yes, all international students enrolling at Singapore Polytechnic are required to go for a medical examination conducted by a medical practitioner registered in Singapore. For details, please refer to the Enrolment website under “Task 2: Go for Colour Vision Test / Medical Examination”.

Question: What is Tuition Grant?

Tuition Grant (TG) is a grant provided by the Government of Singapore, through the Ministry of Education (MOE), to full-time Diploma course students to help pay part of the high cost. Students will be granted up to a maximum of 10 semesters of TG.
Singapore Permanent Residents and International Students who choose to take up TG are required to make an online application and then sign a TG Agreement (TGA) with the Government (2 sureties are required for the execution of the TGA). Under the Agreement, students will be bonded to work for a Singapore entity for 3 years upon graduation. For more information regarding TG, please refer to Tuition Grant for Full-Time Diploma and the MOE Tuition Grant website.

Question: Can I work while studying in SP?

Full-time diploma students are allowed to work part-time for up to 16 hours per week during school term, and working full-time during vacation period.

The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) put in an exemption so that applying for work permits are not necessary. You may refer to MOM's website for more information.

There is no need to obtain permission from SP for part-time work.

Question: Do I need to apply for a student pass?

All international students studying in Singapore will be required to apply for the Student's Pass issued by Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA).

SP will notify international students via email when the application online through the Student's Pass Online Application and Registration (SOLAR) system on ICA's website is open.

Successful applicants will be issued with an In-Principle-Approval (IPA) letter by ICA, which can be downloaded via SOLAR system.

For applicants who require a visa to enter Singapore, a visa is incorporated in the IPA letter. This means that you will not be required to separately apply for a visa and may enter Singapore using the IPA letter at the checkpoints.

SP's eGuide provided in the enrolment website contains a detailed application process that international students may refer to

Question: How should I look for accommodation in Singapore?

There are online websites advertising room or house rentals in Singapore. Accommodation costs vary by geographical area, accommodation type, size, demand, and the number of people sharing a room. Students may refer to the following resources for rooms to rent:

  • Classified Advertisements
  • Online Websites for Property Rental

For full time diploma international students who do not have a family residing in Singapore, you are eligible to apply for on-campus accommodation. Vacancies are limited. Approvals will be determined based on needs basis. Please email your request to contactus@sp.edu.sg.

Question: Will I receive a student card for transportation?

Public transport is available at lower rates for full time Singapore Polytechnic students.  Once you have received your student pass, check your eligibility at the TransitLink website .  If eligible, proceed to submit your application either online or in person at TransitLink offices.  You will receive a second email when the concession card is ready for collection in 10 working days.

Question: Will I need a laptop for my studies in SP?

You will need a laptop for writing reports, e-learning, research, presentations, project discussions, or to run specialised software if your course requires it.  Singapore Polytechnic has partnered vendors to offer laptops at competitive prices. Financial assistance schemes for laptops are available, under the “Financial Assistance for Notebook PC” header.

If you already have an existing laptop, please check if it meets recommended specifications for each course.
