The Common Core Curriculum (CCC) prepares you for a changing world with essential human and digital skills. Through its 10 modules, the CCC also provides a wide learning experience to examine local and global issues based on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Foundations in Applied Chemistry
Year 1 introduces you to the fundamentals of applied chemistry, covering essential practices, terminology, and software. Modules like Biochemistry & Cell Biology and Chemistry & its Applications will build your core knowledge.
Specialisation in Applied Chemistry
In Year 2, you’ll choose a specialisation: Industrial Chemistry, Materials Science, or Pharmaceutical Science. You’ll also work on personal branding and prepare for your internship. The Sustainable Innovation Project (SIP) will let you tackle real-world challenges with innovative solutions.
Specialisation in Industrial Chemistry

SP offers 22 or 44-week internships at various organisations, including startups, SMEs, MNCs, and government agencies. Students in the applied chemistry course have interned at A*STAR, GSK, P&G, Evonik, Health Science authority (HSA), Home team Science and technology agency (HTX). Many have made significant contributions, often outperforming their university counterparts. These experiences often lead to advanced job offers, such as Assistant Engineer and Research Assistant.
Internships offer networking, insights, and job opportunities, giving you real-world experience in your chosen field. SP enhances your confidence and employability through coaching. Multiple internships broaden your perspective, leading to informed career decisions, higher starting salaries, and business exposure. From Chemistry to Medicine: Applied Chemistry Alumna, Faleha D/O Mohamed Rafi, Breaks New Ground at NUS Medical School** Faleha D/O Mohamed Rafi, a 2019 graduate of the Diploma in Applied Chemistry, has made history as the first from her course to join NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. Driven by her deep passion for science and a desire to serve others, Faleha found her calling through Pharmacology and Medicinal Chemistry, igniting her dream to pursue medicine.
Success at First Attempt for Calista Ang at Worldskills Singapore 2023 Calista Abella Ang, a third-year student from the Diploma in Applied Chemistry (Pharmaceutical Science Specialisation), showcased exceptional talent at WorldSkills Singapore 2023, winning gold in Chemical Laboratory Technology. Her course mate, Leticia Wu YinXiu, also earned the Medallion for Excellence. Calista’s success reflects SP’s solid preparation, and she will represent Singapore at the 47th WorldSkills Competition in Lyon, France, in 2024 as an NUS Chemistry student.
Embracing the Journey: So Hong Yi’s Path to Research Success So Hong Yi’s internship at A*STAR IMCB gave him a firsthand look into research, equipping him with skills that shaped his pursuit of becoming a researcher. This experience, along with his dedication to his studies, helped him secure a spot in the CN Yang Scholar’s programme. ‘The chance of success may be uncertain, but the chance of failure is guaranteed if you never try,’ he reflects.
