Being in the SPOT programme was instrumental to my personal growth and leadership abilities during polytechnic. One of the most memorable experiences was participating in Operation Shangri-La 5, where we built incinerators in a village in Yunnan, China. This unique opportunity allowed me to learn brick-laying from local experts and immerse myself in their culture. The villagers’ warmth and hospitality taught me to appreciate the diverse backgrounds and stories of people around me, instilling a deep sense of empathy and respect. This experience not only enhanced my cultural awareness but also made me more grateful for my own upbringing and environment. It was through these interactions that I began to understand the true essence of leadership—supporting and uplifting others regardless of their circumstances.

Under the SPOT student-led initiatives, I wanted to do something unique and close to my heart. Coming from a low-income family, I aimed to provide access to technology for primary students from similar backgrounds. Seeing the joy and hope on the faces of these students reinforced my belief in the power of giving and the importance of taking the first step in making a difference. Another significant experience was the LEAP (Foundation) programme, which included workshops on the ‘7 Habits of Highly Effective College Students’ and an experiential camp. These activities provided a platform for practicing essential habits and interpersonal skills. The SPOT programme’s holistic approach to self-development equipped me with invaluable interpersonal skills and fostered my growth into a compassionate and effective leader. Through SPOT, I have learned that true leadership is about serving others, continuous self-improvement, and embracing every opportunity for growth.
