At 16, fresh out of secondary school, I never imagined how pivotal my next three years at SP would be. I’ve grown so much, discovering what I’m capable of when I put my heart into something I love.

In my first year, I was honestly just hoping to find a CCA to avoid spending all my time going home after class. After considering and trying out for several, I landed on this funky sounding sport called Tchoukball. Having snippets of experience during PE in secondary school, I decided why not and gave it a shot.

Although I wasn’t selected for the POLITE Games in my first year, it definitely motivated me to train even harder. Coupled with the inspiration of how my seniors played with grit and passion, my love for the sport only kept growing. I pushed myself continuously through every training, and eventually my hard work paid off as I earned my spot on the SP team for the InterVarsity Championships (IVP) that same year.

In 2023, I was given the chance to try out for the National Youth Tchoukball Team (M18 girls). Despite doubting myself and entering a new environment alone, I took up the challenge. There was an exponential increase in the intensity of the training from training 2 times a week to 5, but it was all worthwhile when I finally made the team.

After 3 full days of representing Singapore in the 6th World Youth Tchoukball Championship, we won the title of World Champions. It was a dream come true. In those 3 days, I learned the core values of the sport such as Sportsmanship and Integrity. Later, we received the Meritorious Award at the Singapore Sports Awards 2024, an honour I’ll never forget.

Back in SP, I became the Vice-Captain of the women’s team. Though the pressure was intense, it fueled my determination. We worked hard, attending training camps locally and overseas in Taiwan, dedicating countless hours to training. Our efforts paid off with a 3rd place finish in POLITE 2023 and 4th in IVP 2024.

Harnessing leadership and communication skills that I have cultivated during my time in SP, it has better equipped me to work with my team towards our shared goal. This year, as Captain, I’m confident to lead and inspire my team as we prepare for the upcoming POLITE Games in November. Through this journey, I hope not only to impart skill sets of the game but more importantly pass down core values of the sport that I have taken away.

Following my time representing Singapore, I was invited to join a tchoukball club, which allowed me to play in various competitions such as the Community Tchoukball League and the Nee Soon Tchoukball Challenge, emerging first for both. It also gave me the chance to represent my club overseas. In Malacca, I played with both Singapore and International teams above my age category, such as teams from Hong Kong and Macau. Being surrounded by like minded people, it has inspired me to push myself further and led me to participate in the Causeway Inter-club Tchoukball Cup held in Malaysia in December this year.

On top of Tchoukball, I was also involved in the Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering Club (MAEC). Organising events for the student body gave me a newfound appreciation for the efforts behind the scenes. Balancing the hectic training schedule from tchoukball to busy schedule planning events in MAEC, I was able to manage my time well allowing me to enjoy myself and I would not trade any of these unforgettable memories.

I also went on an eye opening trip to Thailand for my Overseas Sustainable Integrated Project (OSIP). In a span of 12 days, I planned and exchanged valuable knowledge and ideas alongside the Thai students to help solve problems within their community. Collaborating with fellow SP students from various schools, I was able to practice team excellence and harness the importance of differing opinions. This broadened my horizon to handling future works involving different views.

But the people I’ve met at SP have truly been the highlight of my journey. From teammates to clubmates, I’ve been surrounded by incredible individuals who have supported me through everything, even in my darkest times. Their kindness and encouragement have been invaluable, and I’m incredibly grateful for each and every one of them. Looking back, my time at SP has been a transformative experience, filled with growth, challenge, and deep connections that I will always cherish.
