With over 14 years of experience in the fields of architecture and interior design, the husband-and-wife team, Mr Mohammed Muzammil Aziz and Ms Zakiyah Zainal Abidin, both 39, wanted to contribute to the wider community outside of the architecture and design sectors in which they are involved. Recognising the lack of Malay/Muslim creative designers in Singapore, the couple sought to make the most of their free time by establishing the PEREKA collective and platform in February 2024. As a Diploma in Interior Design lecturer at SP, Mr Muzammil often wonders where Malay/Muslim graduates go after graduating. Among their key initiatives is a sharing session in the form of a workshop called ‘PEREKA Bengkel’, a learning platform led by a community of designers and other creative professionals. Meanwhile, Ms Zakiyah, a part-time lecturer in Spatial User Experience (UX) Design at SP said the use of AI technology should not be considered a threat even though it is increasingly influencing the design world. According to Mr Muzammil, the main challenge is how AI tools such as SketchImage, DeepAI, and ChatGPT can be accepted in the industry.
