I am Jasper, a Year 3 student taking the Diploma of Infocomm Security Management, DISM (currently known as DCDF) and will be doing my Final Year Project in the coming semester. I decided to enroll in DCITP first after secondary school as I wanted to study under the School of Computing but was unsure of which area in IT to specialize in. As all 3 courses sounded equally interesting, I wanted to understand them more before deciding. I hope my insights can assist those who, like me, were struggling to choose the right course for themselves.
DCITP was a great way to explore in depth about all 3 courses before deciding my main field of studies. As some of you might relate, during secondary school focusing on O levels and CCA meant that I had little experience with IT. I was worried that I would regret my decision if the course I chose was not as interesting as I had hoped. Luckily, ambassadors from SP that visited my secondary school were there to recommend me to take the common ICT program (DCITP). By experiencing a little bit of everything I realized I vastly preferred system administration over data analytics and programming. I enjoyed the challenges posed by matters related to cybersecurity which gave me the motivation and clarity to further pursue it. DCITP also gave me the opportunity to connect with other computing students which helped to inform my final decision to pursue DCDF. I hope my experience was relatable and provides a clear path to consider before making decisions for the next three years in life.
I hope future students, especially those that are undecided reading this, will see it as an opportunity in exploring different areas of ICT through DCITP. This program offers a unique opportunity to discover your passion and gain the experiences needed to make an informed decision. Throughout this journey, I have held onto a simple motto: 'Never Give Up'. While it may seem cliché, the challenges and struggles one faces are common. Each struggle overcome is a step towards your goals and a deeper understanding of your chosen field In the end, I hope this can ensure you make an informed decision and the best decision for yourself.
