Journey from a process technician to an engineer

While Sebastian’s academic performance during his SP’s Diploma in Chemical Engineering (DCHE) days was modest, his excellent character and determination set him apart. Following his lecturer's advice, he joined the industry as a process technician after national service and secured a job with a multi-national oil and gas company. This marked the beginning of an incredible journey.

His operational experiences as a process technician sparked a strong interest in environmental, health, and safety (EHS). With hard work and a timely opportunity, he made a lateral progression to an EHS role in the company. As a keen learner, he completed a part-time Bachelor’s degree in Environmental, Occupational Health and Safety, and a part-time Master’s degree in Safety, Health and Environmental Technology, both supported by his employer. Today, Sebastian is a Senior Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Engineer in the same company.

“Starting my career as a process technician has allowed me to build on what I’ve learnt in DCHE to deepen my competencies in chemical engineering. These valuable experiences strengthened my interest in chemical engineering practice and EHS. Eventually, I then took a bachelor and master degree which value adds to my current job role in EHS and industrial hygiene.”
