Alumna, Diploma in Architecture
2024 DARCH Gold Medallist | Winner of the Toh Chin Chye Gold Medal

As a child, I always had a vivid imagination about what could be done with any space and how things could fit into their surroundings. Dealing with dyslexia from a young age was no easy feat, but my strong family support helped me overcome the challenges I faced. My parents discovered early on that some strengths associated with dyslexia were actually quite useful in architecture, and they exposed me to the field.

From Secondary 1, I attended all of Singapore Polytechnic’s open houses and Early Admission Exercise (EAE) programmes, which solidified my decision to pursue the Diploma in Architecture (DARCH). SP’s progressive curriculum, starting with smaller buildings and gradually moving on to larger projects, built my foundation. During my internship at ADDP Architects, I worked on high-rise projects like mixed-use buildings and new launch condominiums. This experience affirmed my decision to pursue architecture as a career. As architects, we have the ability to shape how people live, and I find that both enjoyable and meaningful.

SP also gave me the chance to interact with people from diverse backgrounds, which helped me develop my soft skills like project and people management. As an introvert, I didn’t expect to enjoy presentations, but I soon realized I had a knack for them. My first-year common foundation programme with students from various design diplomas was also a great opportunity to learn from each other’s perspectives.

Outside of school, I volunteer to help underprivileged children with their studies. Growing up with dyslexia, I know firsthand how tough it can be to develop a learning style that works for you. This has taught me resilience and adaptability.

After graduation, I plan to further my studies to gain global exposure and use my skills to improve living spaces for underprivileged communities.
