Lianhe Zaobao, 24 Nov 2024 - Diploma in Optometry (DOPT) students and staff had a repeated collaboration with Active Ageing Advocates represented by National University of Singapore Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine which took place at Choa Chu Kang Community Centre on 23 and 24 Nov 2024, to raise awareness about the importance of vision care among among those above the age of 50. The collaborative event focused on educating seniors about the relationship between eye health and overall well-being, emphasizing the critical role of regular eye checks as part of active ageing.
The event provided an opportunity for students to interact with elderly participants, offering free eye screenings and guidance on maintaining good vision as they age. Students conducted visual acuity tests, assessed common age-related eye conditions, and provided advice on preventing vision problems and the importance of frequent eye examinations.
The Active Ageing Advocates event was graced by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and Industry, Mr Gan Kim Yong, who also serves as the MP for Chua Chu Kang GRC. A total of approximately 610 participants were screened.
This event highlighted the importance of community-based healthcare, where interdisciplinary teams work together to improve the quality of life for older adults. The collaboration not only benefited the participants with vital vision screenings but also equipped optometry students with practical experience in addressing the unique vision care needs of the ageing population.
