On 25 July 2024, a group of students from SP
Diploma in Optometry (DOPT) course visited Menicon Singapore, a leading company in the contact lens industry. The visit provided insights into the intricate manufacturing process of contact lenses and Menicon's commendable sustainability efforts.
The visit began with a tour of Menicon's state-of-the-art manufacturing facility, where students learned about the stages of contact lens production, from preparing high-quality raw materials to precision moulding and rigorous quality control. Menicon's commitment to hygiene and safety was evident in the sterile packaging process. Additionally, Menicon Singapore's dedication to sustainable practices was highlighted, as the company aligns its operations with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, prioritising eco-friendly materials and reducing environmental impact.
The visit to Menicon Singapore was a valuable experience for our students, providing a unique opportunity to learn about the contact lens industry and the importance of sustainable practices in manufacturing.
One student appreciated the technology and precision in lens production, while another was inspired by Menicon’s environmental efforts. Student Jovan Teo noted, "The visit showed how a company can innovate while caring for the planet and its people." Another student Fiona Toh highlighted Menicon’s sustainability achievements, such as the Miru 1day Menicon Flat Pack, which reduces plastic use by 80%, and redesigned bottles that use 30% less plastic, emphasizing their commitment to reducing environmental impact.
We are grateful to Menicon for their hospitality and for sharing their knowledge and commitment to sustainability with us.
