SP Optometry students conduct vision screening for EN Community Services Society

On July 11 2024, 17 Year 3 students and two lecturers from the SP Diploma in Optometry (DOPT) conducted a vision screening for around 55 members of the EN Community Services Society.

During the event, the DOPT students took participants’ medical histories and performed various eye examinations, including visual acuity tests, Amsler chart assessments, and eye pressure measurements. They also provided management and follow-up recommendations. Throughout these stations, the optometrists built rapport with the participants, gaining a deeper understanding of their visual needs and challenges. This personalised approach ensured that participants received the necessary follow-up treatments and recommendations.

The vision screening helped the elderly participants learn more about common eye conditions such as cataracts, dry eyes, glaucoma, and age-related macular degeneration. Through these screenings, participants gained better awareness of these conditions and the importance of timely eye examinations.

This collaboration provided the optometry students with the opportunity to enhance their clinical skills in a real-world setting. It also highlighted the critical connection between education, healthcare, and primary eye care services.

"Taking part in this vision screening was an invaluable opportunity to give back to the community in terms of eye care."
