SP Chemical Engineering teams win at Singapore Energy Grand Challenge 2023

Two SP teams emerged as the Champion and 1st Runner Up at the Singapore Energy Grand Challenge (SEGC) – IHL 2023 competition, beating ~80 other participating teams from various IHLs, including universities.

Team Powerpuff from SP, made up of Year 3 Chemical Engineering (DCHE) students, Yao En Ting, Ruba Zaki A. Sulaiman, Jasmine Chan Sze Yi, and Hannah To Qi Wen, emerged as the Champion by proposing “Effitrack,” a groundbreaking solution to tackle the issue of solar panel intermittency in Singapore by deploying bifacial solar panels along MRT tracks. In addition, they were voted by those present to be the best presentation!

Team Powerpuff receiving a cash prize of $6000 from Minister of State (MOS), Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth & Ministry of Trade and Industry, Low Yen Ling and Ms. Fillipa Ricciardi, Executive Vice President of EDP Renewables.

Another SP team, “The Cooler Team,” consisting of Year 2 DCHE students Sistla Satya Satvik and Bryan Chan Wei Jie, secured the 1st runner-up position by addressing Tuas Power’s challenge. Tuas Power was interested in Energy Storage Systems and digitalisation to capture new opportunities in the green economy. The proposed solution should consider the environmental impact, land constraints, and cost-effectiveness. The Cooler Team offered an innovative solution to tackle the energy storage system challenges in Singapore underground and also proposed cooling using water chilled through LNG.
