On 9 October 2024, history was made at Singapore Polytechnic with the inaugural Optometry Scrubs Ceremony, a defining moment for the Year 2 students of the
Diploma in Optometry (DOPT) course. This ceremony not only celebrated their dedication and achievements but also marked a significant step toward their future careers in the important field of eye care.
The event began with a heartfelt welcome from Deputy Director Mr. Koh Hong Wee, who highlighted the importance of the scrubs, symbolising the students' commitment to optometry. He emphasised their role in addressing Singapore’s growing eye health challenges, particularly amid rising myopia rates and an ageing population. Mr. Lee Kang Lian, President of the Singapore Optometric Association (SOA), also offered invaluable insights into the evolving world of eye care. He underscored the crucial contributions these future professionals will make in improving the vision and quality of life in their communities.
With the donning of the scrubs and the students’ pledge to uphold values of integrity, compassion, and professionalism, this symbolic moment reinforced student optometrists’ commitment to ethical practice, ensuring they are well-prepared to serve their patients with care and excellence.
