Diploma in Optometry (DOPT) marked a significant milestone by celebrating its 30th anniversary of nurturing optometrists at their Homecoming event on 5 June 2024, which united current students and alumni in a festive gathering. The event commenced with an inspiring address by the Senior Director of CCLS, Dr. Tan Tuan Lin, who lauded the remarkable achievements of Singapore Polytechnic DOPT alumni and their significant contributions to the field of optometry. Dr. Tan emphasised how the alumni have been pivotal in advancing eye care and healthcare as a whole, setting a standard of excellence for current and future students to aspire to.
A key highlight of the event was the unveiling of the
Optometry e-Chronicle, a commemorative publication celebrating three decades of vision care. This chronicle features stories of alumni, industry collaborations, community outreach initiatives and future prospects, reflecting DOPT’s enduring commitment to advancing vision care. The celebrations also included a learning journey through Singapore Polytechnic Optometry Centre, providing alumni with an opportunity to observe the advancements made since their graduation. This journey highlighted Optometry Centre's progress in digitalisation, notably the implementation of a new digital medical records system. The learning journey showcased the innovative measures DOPT is adopting to maintain its leadership in optometry education and practice.
In addition to the formal proceedings, the event offered a cherished platform for alumni to reconnect with former classmates and lecturers. The atmosphere was filled with joy and nostalgia as attendees reminisced and shared memories.
Reflecting on the impact of their education, alumna Ms Wang Shan shared, “The education I received at SP has been instrumental in shaping my professional life. The comprehensive training and hands-on experience provided a solid foundation that has allowed me to excel in my practice and make a meaningful impact on my patients’ lives. The collaborative environment fostered at SP has also been pivotal in teaching me the importance of working with other healthcare professionals to deliver the best possible care.”
“It is remarkable to see the progress made over the past 30 years. As both a former student and now the course chair, I have witnessed the evolution of SP’s Diploma in Optometry. Our continuous collaborative efforts have opened numerous opportunities for our students, equipping them to be future-ready. Together, we will continue to shape the future of optometry,” remarked Mr. Dylan Eng.
